SSA Seeks to Modify Retirement Age Rules in Determining Disability
The Social Security Administration proposes to revise the definition of persons ‘‘closely approaching retirement age’’ from ‘‘60–64’’ to ‘‘60 or older” for its rules on age used in determining disability under the Social Security Act. The change is to acknowledge that the SSA makes disability determinations for those over age 64.
According to the SSA, the proposed changes are technical corrections that would help to explain how the agency currently determines disability for such individuals and would not have any substantive effect. The SSA says comments must be received on the change no later than August 19, 2008.
