Horseplay Injuries Fall Under OSHA Recordkeeping

Injuries resulting from “horseplay gone badly” at work is a recordable event if the injury requires treatment beyond first aid, according to a Standard Interpretation Letter from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration.

An employer contended that the work environment did not contribute to an incident in which bantering led to a physical confrontation between two employees after work but on company premises. OSHA says, however, that the “work environment includes any location where one or more employees are working or are present as a condition of their employment,” so the injury which resulted from the altercation between the two employees was thus work-related and reportable.
