The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued a supplement to its enforcement guidance on unlawful treatment of workers with caregiving responsibilities.
The EEOC supplement provides suggestions for “proactive” employer practices to reduce the chance of violations against caregivers, and to remove barriers to equal employment opportunity, according to the agency. The practices suggested by EEOC include: training managers about the company’s legal obligations in the treatment of workers who are caregivers; developing disseminating and enforcing a strong EEO policy; responding to complaints of caregiver discrimination “efficiently and effectively”; and protecting against retaliation for complaints. The supplement also provides general guidelines for recruitment, hiring and promotion, and “terms, conditions and privileges of employment” to avoid discrimination.
