Terminating an employee can be difficult, uncomfortable, and impactful for a company.  It’s no secret that a poorly planned and executed discharge could lead to the potential for legal liability.  While terminating an employee is never pleasant, the key to successfully handling this kind of situation is to accurately assess your risks, and thoughtfully prepare for it.

Join us for this insightful session where our speakers will discuss best practices and considerations in leading up to and conducting terminations, including:

  • Analyzing risk before deciding to terminate
  • Unemployment insurance
  • Severance Agreements and Waivers
  • Communicating the termination
  • Practical considerations, including final payment of wages, return of company property, and confidentiality concerns.

About our Speakers:
John L. Knorek, Director at Torkildson Katz Hetherington Harris Knorek, Attorneys at Law, provides counsel and representation to large and small employers in all aspects of employment and wrongful discharge law. His practice also includes collective bargaining negotiations, affirmative action compliance, mediation and arbitration. He provides training to businesses on employment discrimination and preventative personnel practices, including family leave, disability law and sexual harassment. Mr. Knorek is a founding co-editor of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce's Desk Manual for Employers and its Model Employer Handbook.

Kendra K. Kawai is a Director in the labor and employment department of the firm. She has extensive trial experience and regularly defends small and large employers in discrimination, harassment and disability cases at the administrative, state and federal levels. She also provides employers with guidance on wage and hour compliance issues and evaluates and updates employee handbooks.
