WEBINAR New Developments in I-9 Compliance in a Remote Workplace World
On March 20, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced flexibility in complying with requirements related to Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, due to COVID-19. Tune in to this seminar for more information on how employers with remote employees may obtain, remotely inspect, and retain copies of the identity and employment eligibility documents their employees provide to complete Section 2 of Form I-9.

NEWTON JOHN CHU is a director (partner) of the firm and has managed the firm’s Hawaii Island office for over 20 years. Mr. Chu received his B.A. degree from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, where he earned the Lee‑shao Chang Award for Excellence in Chinese Studies. He received his J.D. from the Antioch School of Law, Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the firm Mr. Chu was a partner in a Los Angeles immigration law firm.
Mr. Chu's practice includes general corporate and employment law, liquor and administrative licensing and immigration law on all islands. Mr. Chu serves as legal counsel for numerous retailers, restaurants, scientific institutions, educational institutions, resorts and non-profit organizations, including some of the largest employers in the state. Mr. Chu is a frequent lecturer on various topics concerning licensing, immigration and employment law at numerous business seminars and organizations throughout the state. He is a founding member of the Alliance of Alcohol Industry Attorneys and Consultants (“AAIAC”). He has spoken nationally on behalf of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (“AILA”), and is past-Chair of the Hawaii Chapter of AILA. He co-authored “Employment Verification Systems- Where are We and Where are We Going” Immigration & Nationality Law Handbook 2006-07 Edition, AILA., “Is Your Event Secure? Immigration Options for Artists and Entertainers, AILA 2007, 2014. He has also co-authored "The Chamber Desk Manual, Labor and Employment Law for the Hawaii Employer” published by the firm.
Mr. Chu is a member of the Hawaii Bar, the California Bar (inactive), the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court in both California and Hawaii. He serves as an Officer and Director for numerous civic and charitable organizations. He is a member and Past-President of the Rotary Club of Hilo, Past-President of the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Past-President of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Big Island Chapter. He is Director Emeritus of the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island. He is currently a Director of the Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America, and Secretary/Director of the Hilo High School Foundation.
