Foundations of Workplace Safety: Importance of a Safety and Health Program
Foundations of Workplace Safety: Importance of a Safety and Health Program is the first of a four-part series of safety program curriculum to help employees understand and engage in workplace safety. Participants are welcome to register for the entire series, or for each individual workshop.
This three-hour workshop emphasizes building a strong safety culture by understanding the role of safety programs, identifying workplace hazards, and effectively training employees. Key topics include OSHA and HIOSH standards, risk assessment basics, and developing a hazard reporting system. Through interactive activities such as case studies, group exercises, role-playing, and photo-based hazard identification, attendees will gain practical skills to recognize hazards and promote a safe work environment.
Topics Covered:
Driving Safety Culture
Use of visual aids and case studies of common workplace hazards. Provide handouts with OSHA guidelines and interactive quizzes to reinforce key points.
OSHA and HIOSH Standards
Use of visual aids (e.g., OSHA posters) and case studies of common workplace hazards. Provide handouts with OSHA guidelines and interactive quizzes to reinforce key points.
Risk Engineering Basics
Conduct a group exercise in which participants perform a simple risk assessment on a hypothetical task, identifying potential hazards. Facilitate a discussion on the probability and severity of each hazard.
Developing a Hazard Report System
Use of a workshop format where employees design a sample hazard report form, incorporating key OSHA requirements. Practice filling out the form based on specific scenarios.
Employee Training Methods
Conduct a role-play activity where one group of employees is tasked with explaining hazard identification to a "new employee" group, emphasizing clear communication and safety best practices.
Practical Hazard Spotting Exercises
Organize a workplace tour or photo-based exercise where employees identify and record potential hazards, both obvious and hidden, and then discuss findings in groups.
