Setting up Safety Controls: Building a Safety and Health Program
Setting up Safety Controls: Building a Safety and Health Program is the second of a four-part series of safety program curriculum to help employees understand and engage in workplace safety. Participants are welcome to register for the entire series, or for each individual workshop.
This three-hour workshop focuses on OSHA’s hierarchy of controls, risk engineering, and creating effective Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs). Participants will engage in hands-on activities, including mock inspections, group workshops on hazard ranking, and revising sample SOPs to align with OSHA standards. The interactive exercises will empower attendees to apply safety controls effectively and ensure compliance through structured inspection processes.
Topics Covered:
OSHA Hierarchy of Controls
Provide examples of each control level with real-world scenarios (e.g., replacing hazardous chemicals or using PPE). Use visual diagrams to show the hierarchy in action.
Risk Engineering for Control Implementation
Conduct a mini workshop where employees apply risk engineering principles to rank hazards identified in Quarter 1, then brainstorm possible controls.
Creating and Reviewing Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Distribute sample SOPs and break into groups to revise them, incorporating controls aligned with OSHA standards. Each group presents their revised SOP and explains the changes.
Inspection Checklists and Compliance Tools
Provide employees with OSHA inspection checklists and walk them through a mock inspection exercise. Use a checklist tailored to your industry and debrief on findings.
Simulated Safety Inspections
Conduct a real-time inspection simulation in a training room or specific workplace area, assigning participants as inspectors to identify any issues. Allow time for feedback and discussion on how they would correct each issue.
