Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location:

Components of a Safety and Health Program is the third of a four-part series of safety program curriculum to help employees understand and engage in workplace safety. Participants are welcome to register for the entire series, or for each individual workshop.

This three-hour workshop dives into the essential components of an effective safety and health program. Participants will learn to develop emergency action plans, design emergency response procedures, and implement systems for hazard recognition and feedback collection. The workshop combines scenario-based activities, role-playing simulations, and group exercises to equip attendees with practical tools for addressing emergencies and fostering continuous safety improvements. By focusing on management commitment, hazard prevention, and employee training, this workshop ensures participants can build comprehensive safety programs tailored to their organizations.

Topics Covered:

OSHA Emergency Action Plan Requirements (Sample)
Review OSHA’s requirements for emergency action plans with employees, then ask them to design a simple emergency plan for a specific incident (e.g., fire or chemical spill). Discuss compliance aspects together.

Risk Engineering in Emergency Planning
Conduct a risk prioritization exercise, where participants rate potential emergency situations (fire, flood, equipment failure) on likelihood and severity. Discuss engineering strategies to mitigate the highest risks.

Developing Emergency Response Procedures
Use a scenario-based activity in which employees develop step-by-step emergency procedures for a hypothetical emergency. Have each group present their procedures and evaluate them together.

Feedback Collection Methods
Demonstrate how to set up a feedback collection system (e.g., anonymous suggestion boxes or digital surveys) and let employees practice submitting suggestions. Discuss how each suggestion could contribute to improved safety.

Group Exercise in Emergency Simulation
Conduct a role-play emergency simulation, assigning employees to various roles (e.g., incident leader, first responder). Debrief on their responses and encourage feedback on how procedures could be improved.
