Foundations of Workplace Safety: Evaluation and Monitoring Your Safety Program for Continuous Improvement
Evaluation and Monitoring for Continuous Improvement is the fourth of a four-part series of safety program curriculum to help employees understand and engage in workplace safety. Participants are welcome to register for the entire series, or for each individual workshop.
This three-hour workshop will teach participants how to assess and enhance workplace safety programs for continuous improvement. This session focuses on OSHA evaluation requirements, root cause analysis, and employee-driven safety initiatives. Activities include mock evaluations, brainstorming sessions, and the creation of continuous improvement plans. Through real-world applications and case study analyses, attendees will learn to identify program weaknesses, gather lessons from past incidents, and implement sustainable improvements to maintain a proactive safety culture.
Topics Covered:
- Continuous Improvement to Safety Program
What is continuous safety improvement? Committing to constantly analyzing your safety performance through fact-based data, written policies & procedures, program implementation - job behavior, root causes & process, program challenges & weaknesses, and experimenting with changes that will lead to long-term systems improvement. Once continuous safety improvement is in place, results will follow. - Verifying Program Implementation
Confirm that safety procedures and policies are actively followed in the daily operation. Perform internal audits or spot checks. Interview supervisors and employees to verify understanding and consistency. Check documentation: safety meeting logs, training records, inspection reports. Ensure management is visibly supporting and enforcing the program. - Identifying and Correcting Shortcomings
Many times, root cause analysis is performed effectively but challenges can arise. Creating a safe space for everyone to provide honest feedback. Navigating through the accident investigation process and discussing the challenges that may arise with support, procedures, training, or communication. Prioritize corrective actions based on risk level and frequency. Address system-level flaws, not just symptoms. - How to Achieve and Measure Safety Program Success? Evaluating the Foundation of Your Safety Program
How can an employer measure success? Do you have all the safety program components in place and is it working? Are you experiencing lower insurance premiums based on all the work you put into your safety program?
We will dive deeper into evaluating whether your current program reflects actual workplace practices, alignment with company policies, regulatory requirements, and safety goals. Determine whether your written procedures, roles, and training content are working and identify outdated practices, missing components, or unclear responsibilities.
