Feature of the Month
A well-drafted employee handbook is foundational to any employer's relationship with its workers. It sets the tone of the work relationship, clarifies the employer's expectations, provides a basis for consistently applying rules and procedures across the organization, and guides managers and employees in their effort to meet operational objectives. An employee handbook also serves as a legal compliance tool by, for example, documenting the employer's commitment to equal employment opportunity and "at will" employment, and articulating its prohibitions of harassment, workplace violence and other misconduct. Employers must therefore ensure that their handbooks reflect legal changes in a timely manner, and HEC recommends that you work alongside competent legal counsel or HEC staff to periodically review and revise your handbook. This month's feature, HEC's "Guide to Preparing an Employee Handbook and Sample Handbook Policy Statements," will assist in this effort, and HEC staff members are always available to address any questions or concerns you may have.
