Golf Club Membership and Facilities Usage on the Rise, according to HEC Survey
The Hawaii Employers Council is pleased to release the 2018 Golf and Membership Clubs Salary Survey. HEC conducts the Golf & Membership Clubs Salary Survey annually. The survey was conducted between January and April 2018. A total of 18 golf and membership clubs participated. Thirty-five professional and non-exempt jobs found in the industry were reported in the survey.
Membership and Club Usage
Club membership enrollment and facility usage are important factors for the success of golf and membership clubs in Hawaii. Survey participants were asked to share membership and club facility usage experiences. Eight of the eighteen participating facilities shared their experiences regarding membership. More than half of these facilities (five facilities, 62.5%) reported membership has been on the rise, two facilities (25.0%) reported membership being neutral and only one facility (12.5%) reported experiencing a decline in membership.
All eighteen facilities shared their experiences regarding facility usage. Half of the participants (nine facilities, 50.0%) reported an increase in usage of their facility over the past year. Five facilities (27.8%) reported facility usage remaining neutral, while four facilities, (22.2%) reported decreased usage of their facility.
Actions Taken to Increase Membership & Usage
Golf and membership clubs continue to seek ways to attract and retain members.
Fifteen facilities shared insights on the actions they are taking to increase membership and facility usage. This was done by selecting the actions each facility has taken out of a list of fifteen options, represented in the chart below.
The top five actions identified by more than 50% of the facilities are listed in order of greatest responses received:
- Offer rental equipment (for beginners or out of town golfers)
- Offer social events to increase interest in golf
- Offer discounted pricing (Youth, Senior, Military and/or Kama'aina)
- Offer twilight hour discounts
- Host vendor events
Golf Equipment Rental
Traveling golfers often want to golf during their visit to the islands but may find it inconvenient to bring their own golf equipment. Fifteen facilities classified as golf or combination of both membership and golf clubs shared the availability of golf equipment rentals. Of the fifteen facilities, thirteen (86.7%) offer golf equipment rentals to meet the needs of these golfers, with two facilities (13.3%) not offering equipment rentals.
Of the thirteen facilities providing golf equipment for rental, seven facilities (53.8%) reported an increase in equipment rentals by travelers who opt out of paying extra airline baggage fees. Two facilities (15.4%) have not experienced any increase in equipment rentals and the remaining four facilities (30.8%) are unsure of changes in equipment rentals.
