Website Created to Help Public-Sector Workers Stop Paying Nonmember Dues to Union

Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2018 6:28 am

In Janus v. American Federation of State, the U.S. Supreme Court held that public-sector employees cannot be forced to pay nonmember dues, also known as “agency fees,” to a union because such practice violates the First Amendment.  Under Janus, employees must affirmatively consent to union deductions.

To assist public employees with their Janus rights, the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation set up a website.   The website, www.MyJanusRights.org, provides a sample letter public-sector employees may send to their union and employer to request the termination of unauthorized payroll deductions for agency fees.  Staff attorneys at the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation can also be reached at 1-800-336-3600 or legal@nrtw.org.
