HEC Board of Governors Nominees for 2020 Announced

The Nominating Committee of the Hawaii Employers Council has filed with Corporate Secretary Sheri-Ann Lau Clark the names of 10 nominees for election to three-year terms on HEC’s Board of Governors, beginning in 2020.

The names of the Board nominees will appear on the proxy ballot that will be sent to members.  Election results will be announced at HEC’s 76th Annual Meeting on November 19th at the Sheraton Waikiki.

Candidate Bios

Jan Harada, Executive Director, H.T. Hayashi Foundation.  The most important thing to know about Jan Harada is that she is a 17+ year practitioner of traditional Southern Chinese Kung Fu, Lion Dancing, and Qigong.  In 2019 she also began learning the practice of zen meditation. All of these things are critical components of her ability to manage and lead in her day-to-day duties working as the executive director of the H.T. Hayashi Foundation, where she began in mid-June 2019 after a 3 month sabbatical following 12 years as a CEO/Executive Director for two different community-based nonprofit organizations.  Jan also serves on the board of the Henry & Colene Wong Foundation.  Jan is a Pacific Century Fellow, Weinberg Fellow, and Omidyar Fellow while also having graduated from Punahou School, the University of Oregon, and the University of Oregon School of Law.  After graduating from law school, she returned home, took the Bar, passed the Bar, got sworn in, and then decided not to practice (she is inactive status with the Hawaii State Bar Association).  Instead, she has spent the last 19 years in service-oriented roles as a part of her life of service.

Lina Le, Human Resources Enterprise Director, Y. Hata & Co., Limited.  Lina joined Y. Hata & Co., Limited in 2015 and was most recently promoted to Human Resources Enterprise Director in July 2019.  Y. Hata is Hawaii’s oldest and largest locally owned food distributor with over 430 employees, eight locations on four islands including ChefZone and King Specialty Foods.  Lina brings experience in a variety of industries including hospitality, airline, education, and food distribution and has been a part of multiple system integrations, outsourcing, mergers and acquisitions and companywide reorganizations.  She is very involved with the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and serves on the SHRM National Young Professional Advisory Committee (YPAC), SHRM Hawaii Chapter Young Professionals Committee and SHRM Hawaii Board of Directors.  Lina holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Shidler College of Business and is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional.

John Lee, Vice President & Corporate Tax Director, Servco Pacific, Inc.  Since 2015, John has served as the global head of tax for Servco Pacific, Inc.  Under his direction, John built a tax function capable of meeting the demands of a growth company and an ever-changing tax/regulatory landscape.  His accomplishments include elevating the tax function to become a strategic partner in significant-company-wide efforts, establishing policies to reduce risks, improving efficiencies in the tax provision process, and achieving a competitive effective tax rate (relative to industry peers).  He has synthesized complex tax developments for all stakeholders and spearheaded tax aspects of all deals. Prior to joining Servco Pacific, John was the International Tax Director for PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP.  He earned his Master of Business Taxation and B.S. in Business Administration, both from the University of Southern California.  While taking a break from studying tax, John earned a Diplôme de Cuisine from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France.

Paul Naso, General Counsel, Hawaii Employers' Mutual Insurance Company.  Paul Naso oversees the legal and government affairs for HEMIC. As General Counsel, he provides legal advice to HEMIC’s Executive Management Team on all company-related matters.  In addition, his team provides legal support to HEMIC’s operation services.  Paul brings to HEMIC over 25 years of legal experience in the insurance industry both in litigation and transactional capacities.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from East Carolina University, where he also served as Student Government President.  Paul earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of San Francisco, School of Law in 1993 and has practiced in both California and Hawaii.  Before his legal career, Paul acquired extensive business expertise serving in key management positions with several start-up companies in California and Washington.  Paul currently serves as Treasurer of the Hawai`i State Bar Association and President of its Corporate Counsel Section.

Richard Rand, Partner, Marr Jones & Wang.  Richard has practiced labor and employment law in Hawaii for more than 38 years.  He has counseled employers on a wide range of federal and state legal issues including employment claims, wage and hour law, traditional labor law issues, complex labor negotiations and Davis Bacon Act compliance.  Known as an experienced trial lawyer, he has served as lead counsel in jury trials in both federal and state court, in state and federal administrative proceedings, and has argued numerous cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Hawaii Appellate Courts.  Richard also represents employers in arbitration and mediation proceedings.  He has represented both buyers and sellers in the labor and employment aspects of many major real estate transactions.  He negotiates collective bargaining agreements for employers and counsels them on the administration of those agreements.  Richard has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America as one of Hawaii’s premier employment lawyers.  He is also listed in the Chambers USA directory, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.  He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University Law Center.

Bruce M. Rosen, Executive Vice President, Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union.  As the Executive VP for Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU), Bruce has total responsibility for Operations, Loans, Finance and Accounting, Technology, Marketing, Human Resources, Compliance, Business Development, and Administration.  With over 30 years of experience as a financial executive, Bruce's experience includes VP/General Manager of Bishop Insurance Agency, Chief Financial Officer of Board of Water Supply, Chief Financial Officer & Customer Services for United Laundry Services, Inc., Financial Controller for DFS USA, A Division of DFS Group, L.P., and Vice President – Finance and Administration – Oahu Gas Service, Inc. He holds a M.S. in Operations Research from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the University of Hawaii.

Gavin Swain, Vice President and Chief Actuary, Hawaii Medical Service Association.  Gavin oversees the actuarial and underwriting departments, as well as various financial planning and analysis functions.  During his four years with the company, Gavin has also led the Market and Product Strategy department, as well as served as the line of business owner for HMSA’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) business.  Gavin has more than two decades of experience in the health insurance industry that includes overseeing pricing for UnitedHealthcare’s western region commercial business and more recently serving as the regional actuarial director for Kaiser Permanente’s Hawaii region before joining HMSA.

Gavin is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.  He is originally from South Africa, where he graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Science degree before immigrating to the United States in the late 1990s.  Gavin enjoys the outdoors and is an avid surfer and former paraglider and skydiving instructor. 

Glenn Yamashita, VP of Finance, Honolulu Cookie Company.  Glenn joined Honolulu Cookie Company as Vice President of Finance with more than 30 years’ experience in the hospitality, technology, telecommunications, real estate and banking industries. His responsibilities at the vertically integrated manufacturing, retailing and distribution company, known for its pineapple shaped shortbread cookies, include overseeing all financial management, planning and analysis, budgeting, and information technology.

A specialist in financial and strategic planning and corporate development strategies, with more than 25 years executive management experience, 18+ years of which in a CFO role, he has directed operations and finance divisions, providing planning, policy and procedures development for both start-ups and mature companies, including the Broadband ITV, Inc., Pihana Pacific Inc., and Sprint Hawaii.

Glenn’s educational background includes a Masters of Management degree in Finance, Marketing and Management Strategy from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a Bachelors’ degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa

Bob Gunter, President & CEO, Kōloa Rum Company.  Bob joined Kōloa Rum Company in 2008 as Chief Operations Officer and was promoted to President & CEO in May 2010.  Currently, he is responsible for all aspects of the Company’s daily operations.  Bob previously served as Operations Manager with Sandwich Islands Distilling Corporation and Vice President of Operations with Hawaiian Islands Spirits, Inc. in Maui.  His prior employment in Hawaii includes serving as Employee Relations Supervisor, AMFAC Sugar (Lihue Plantation) and Director of Human Resources, Citizens Utilities Company (Kauai Electric Division).  Bob attended the University of South Carolina, Palmer College of Business, and Kennedy-Western University.  He has a BS in Business Administration and holds a certification as Professional in Human Resources from the National Society of Human Resource Management.  He is also a member of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on its Board of Directors.

Gregg Nelson, General Manager, Chief Executive Officer and President, Napili Kai Beach Resort.  Gregg has served as the General Manager, CEO and President of Napili Kai for the past 16 years.  He has worked over 40 years in a variety of positions in the hospitality industry, most of which have been in Hawaii.  In addition to his current position at Napili Kai, Gregg has also served on many boards and commissions, including over fifteen years on the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association Board of Directors, five of those years as the chairman.  Additionally, he has spent many years on the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Board of Directors, serving as chairman in 2017-2018 and is also currently on boards for the Hawaii Visitor and Convention Bureau and Maui Visitor Bureau.
