On March 5, 2024, the Dartmouth College Men’s Basketball team players voted “yes” to being represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 560.
Dartmouth rejected SEIU’s request to begin bargaining for a labor contract and appealed for a full board review regarding the decision of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) regional director to classify the athletes as employees.
If the NLRB rejects Dartmouth’s appeal, the school’s only option is to refuse to bargain with the union. This would create an unfair labor practice hearing, which would allow a court to review the athletes’ worker status.
