The Fundamentals of Supervision Series is an introduction to important knowledge and skills required to effectively manage a team. These courses are valuable for first-time supervisors or as a good back-to-basics refresher for any supervisor.

The courses are 2 hours in length and combine lectures, videos, case studies, and role-play exercises.

Foundational Knowledge

Supervision 101

This course focuses on the foundation needed to be an effective, people-focused leader. Attendees will learn about the core responsibilities of being a supervisor, how to build relationships with their employees using emotional intelligence, and how to help inspire their employees to be motivated and engaged.

Introduction to Employment Law
This course provides a general overview and understanding of the federal and state laws that have the biggest impact on supervisors and their ability to make employment-related decisions.

Respectful Conduct

Leading Generations in the Workplace
There is no denying that the landscape of our workforce is transforming. Leaders are realizing the complexities involved in leading a multigenerational workforce, and the importance of understanding the varying core values, work ethics and communication styles of each generation.

In this course you will learn about challenges and benefits of the varying styles and the strategies to adopt as a leader to engage, motivate and empower your team to practice inclusivity and thrive in their collaboration and achievements individually and as a team.

In this course you will learn about:

  • The differences between generations
  • Addressing stereotypes and biases
  • Benefits and challenges of a Multigenerational team
  • Leadership strategies to engage, empower and motivate
  • What lies ahead with future generations

Preventing Workplace Harassment
This course is designed to help supervisors take a proactive approach in preventing harassment from occurring within their organizations. Attendees will learn what harassment is and the impact it has, as well as how to create a harassment-free workplace by cultivating a respectful work culture amongst their team. Additionally, they will learn how to identify harassment and gain insight into what their responsibilities are for handling harassment-related issues and complaints. (A one-hour presentation is available for employees.)

Managing Conflict in the Workplace
This course will cover essential skills and strategies to equip supervisors in handling workplace conflicts effectively. Participants will learn to identify, address, and resolve conflicts within their teams through an in-depth exploration of communication techniques, mediation strategies, and other proactive measures.

  • Understand a supervisor's role in recognizing and managing conflict

Personnel Management

Interviewing & Selecting
Attendees will learn techniques to successfully prepare for and conduct an interview, including what to look for on an application form, how to ask appropriate job-related questions, and what questions to avoid that could be considered unlawful. Attendees will have an opportunity to create interview questions and practice the concepts taught in class.

  • Learn how to prepare for and conduct interviews
  • Discuss important factors to consider when evaluating candidates

Building Employee Performance
This course will teach supervisors how to hold themselves accountable to contributing to their employees’ success through performance management. Participants will practice creating clear and objective performance standards and learn the art of Positive Discipline to empower employees to take ownership of their actions to meet those standards and expectations.

Appraising Performance: An Ongoing Process
This course expands on the Building Employee Performance course to instruct supervisors on how to appraise the performance that they have invested in managing. Attendees will learn how to find the information needed to measure and compare performance to what is expected, how a performance appraisal rating system works, how to provide objective and constructive feedback, and how to conduct an effective appraisal meeting.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the performance appraisal process and its benefits
  • Understand how performance is measured and evaluated
  • Learn how to prepare for and conduct the performance appraisal meeting
  • Discuss how to provide positive and developmental feedback
  • Determine how to make decisions to develop future performance

HEC Members: The price for prescheduled public sessions is $65 per seat, per course. The content of these courses can also be designed to be presented privately to fit your company’s unique culture and tailored to highlight issues that are important to your workplace. We use your company's forms, policies, and procedures to the greatest of our ability. Contact the HEC Talent & Organizational Development Department for the pricing of privately facilitated in-person or virtual sessions, either at your location or at HEC's training facilities. Schedule the entire series or select the individual course topics that fit your needs.
