Disability Inclusion in the Workplace

Date: November 20, 2019
Time: 8:45 am - 11:00 am
Location:
Hawaii Employers Council
2682 Waiwai Loop
Honolulu, HI 96819

Persons with disabilities represent one of the most valuable albeit underutilized groups of applicants and employees today. In this highly interactive session Dr. Richard Pimentel and Milt Wright will conduct three interactive awareness exercises from the highly rated “WINDMILLS: Changing the Perception of Ability” employment training program to help participants learn how they can influence and contribute to their organization's people management strategy.

The exercises include:

  1. Pick a Disability: this interactive exercise explores how our attitudes and beliefs about disabilities can impact on the employment and management decisions we make about persons with disabilities. The exercise provides guidelines for focusing on the person with the disability rather than on the person’s disability when making employment related decisions.
  2. Disability Poker: This exercise demonstrates how supervisors and managers can more effectively communicate with employees with disabilities who may have accommodation needs on the job. Provides common sense examples of how employers can engage in the “interactive communication process” as required in the ADAAA.
  3. Disability Fact or Fiction: this questionnaire handout with detailed answers explores myths, beliefs and stereotypes many people have about persons with disabilities and provides guidelines for language, etiquette, and interaction with persons with disabilities in the workplace.
