Less than Twenty Percent of Disabled Individuals were Employed in 2012, according to BLS Survey

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 17.8% of disabled individuals were employed in 2012, whereas the employment-population ration for non-disabled individuals was at 63.9% for the same period. While the data showed that disabled individuals across all age groups were employed at rates significantly lower than their non-disabled counterparts, the low employment rate for disabled individuals is due in part to the fact that a large share of that population was age 65 or over. Thirty-three percent of employed disabled individuals worked part-time, as compared to 19% of non-disabled workers. Disabled workers were more likely to work in production, transportation and materials moving industries and less likely to work in management or professional occupations than non-disabled workers.
