The Hawaii Health Connector has announced that individuals who are currently receiving COBRA benefits due to a loss of employment are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). The SEP is time outside of an Open Enrollment Period during which an individual with a qualifying life event is able to sign up for insurance coverage. Those currently eligible for COBRA can now enroll in the Hawaii Health Connector by July 1, 2014 to explore health insurance options available through the Connector. Advantages of doing so include the availability of federal tax credits to help pay premiums, in addition to possible cost-sharing reductions for lower deductibles, co-payments, and coinsurance amounts.
