Performance management is a critical part of a supervisor's responsibilities, as employee performance directly impacts an organization's bottom line. When done properly, performance appraisals provide a valuable contribution to performance management, by assisting to improve work performance, advise employees of work expectations, and motivate employees to improve or grow in new areas. All to often, many of the values of conducting performance appraisals go unrealized because managers find the process frustrating or intimidating. To assist in changing that perspective, HEC recommends that employers take some time in November to assess their performance appraisal process to determine what is working well and identify areas for improvement. The Council has published "A Supervisor's Guide to Conducting Effective Performance Appraisals" and several sample performance appraisal forms to provide a roadmap in this process.
