DOL Settles Wage and Hour Grievance Against Itself for $7 Million

Published Friday, August 26, 2016 9:32 pm

On August 12, 2006, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) settled its own back pay and overtime grievance for $7 million.  The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 12, which represents workers in Washington, DC, filed a grievance in 2006 alleging "off the clock" work and unpaid overtime.

In a press release, Alex Bastani, AFGE Local 12's President, stated, "You cannot begin to imagine how difficult it was to challenge and then fight the Department of Labor for ten years over its own failure to adhere to these laws and failure to properly compensate its own employees ? but that's what exactly what our Union did - successfully."
