Don't Forget to Review Form I-9 for Social Security Number Glitch

Published Monday, April 24, 2017 7:25 am

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has advised employers to review the version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, that they are using to ensure that there are no issues with the employee Social Security number information provided in Section 1.  Employers who downloaded the revised Form I-9 between November 14 and November 17, 2016 received a faulty document.  It contained a glitch in the Social Security number field that resulted in the transposing of numbers after employees completed and printed Section 1 using a computer.  While the agency repaired and reposted the form on November 17, 2016, it is possible that some employers remain unaware of the glitch and continue to use the faulty form.

Employers who are using a Form I-9 that contains this Social Security number glitch should download and use an updated version of the form from the USCIS website.  They should also correct any Social Security number errors that may have occurred by having affected employees draw a line through the inaccurate Social Security number on their I-9 form, write in the correct number, and initial and date the change that was made.  Employers should also include a short description of why the change was made with the corrected Form I-9, which can be referenced as needed during subsequent audits.
