2021 Information Technology Pay Survey Summary

A total of seventy-eight (78) organizations provided data with pay rates effective as of May 1, 2021. 

IT Staffing

Over one-half (57.1%) of participating organizations have one to nine employees staffing their Information Technology department with 18.2% having fifty or more IT employees and 15.6% having ten to nineteen IT employees.

Over three-fourths of the participating organizations (85.9%, 67 organizations), have their IT staff being part of the non-bargaining workforce, with 14.1% of these organizations having collective bargaining agreements.

Hours of Work

More than three-fourths of participating organizations (80.8%) indicate that the IT staff generally work 40 hours per week (which has been consistent over the past eight years).  Over one-half of the organizations (53.8%) indicated work schedules that begin at 8:00am.

Although over half of the organizations (67.5%) do not provide overtime or grant compensatory time-off to the exempt IT staff, 31.2% of organizations do have a formal or informal policy recognizing extra work.

The top four practices used when non-supervisory exempt IT staff are scheduled to work beyond their normal workweek include:

  • Other (insufficient data was provided to identify specifics)
  • Compensatory time off
  • No additional compensation or time off
  • Additional compensation at time and one-half

Bonus/Incentives

Organizations continue to provide Referral Bonus, Sign-on Bonus and Retention Bonus for IT position shortages.  However, the upward trend which occurred through 2019 declined in 2020 and 2021, possibly as a reaction to the pandemic.

45.3% of organizations do not provide a bonus or annual incentive as part of their compensation program.  For those organizations providing some type of incentive compensation, 30.7% provide discretionary incentives and 22.7% provide non-discretionary individual incentives.

IT Equipment

Most organizations noted that the IT staff supports PCs or laptops, additionally the following equipment are supported as well, where “Other Equipment” was noted, it included telecommunications, copiers, scanners, routers, modems, medical equipment, and cell phones.
