In response to several member inquiries regarding remote/hybrid practices of local employers, we recently surveyed subscribers to Hawaii Employers Council’s News Digest to hear their practices and plans. The survey was conducted between February 7 and February 14, 2023. We received 26 responses from companies ranging from 5 to more than 500 employees.

Three survey respondents reported a fully in-office workforce, while another three reported a fully remote workforce. Other respondents ranged from having 2% to 95%, with a median of 20%, of their workforce working from home at least one day a week.
Other responses include a combination of remote, hybrid, and in-person, or working remote or in-person as needed.
In response to the question of how often hybrid workers are required to report to the office or worksite, respondents reported a range of once a month to up to four times a week. Others did not report a specific number, but that hybrid workers are required to report to the office or worksite as needed, or that the requirement varies.
No respondents reported providing a reimbursement for electricity, while other responses included mileage reimbursement, peripheral computer equipment, and a lump sum to help furnish/equip the home office.
More than half (16) of the respondents reported their current practices as working for them and not being likely to change their current practices. Six respondents reported still working on finding what works best, and three reported working on fine tuning their established policies. Methods used for establishing current policies included balancing business needs, implementing corporate decisions, listening to feedback from leadership & employees, trial & error, and following national trends/practices.
Additionally, most (17) respondents have not and have no plans to reduce their physical office space due to hybrid/remote work, while six reported considering or already reducing their physical office space. Two respondents reported still considering their options.
